Heralded as a rare achievement of Chen Taijiquan, the 38 Movement Short form was compiled by Grandmaster Chen Xiowang - the 19th Generation Standard Bearer of Chen Style Taijiquan - to build a well-rounded foundation for the Chen style novice. Grandmaster Chen's choice of 38 fundamental techniques capture the essence of both the Lao Jia and Xin Jia versions of Chen Taiji. The 38 techniques that comprise the form combine the circular, twining movement of Xi Jia with the classic extended movement of Lao Jia. This rich balance distinguishes the 38 Movement Short form as a comprehensive introduction to Chen boxing's dynamic combat technique and the style's use of "silk reeling power" and "fa jing". Deleting the repetition of movement found in the other routines, the 38 Movement Short form quickly grounds the student in the power and diversity of Chen technique from the start. As performed and taught by Master Ren, the 38 Movement Short Form has become the cornerstone of the modern Chen Boxing canon.
Master Ren Guang-Yi is one of the premier students of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang. He has devoted his energies to the practice and teaching of classical Chen boxing throughout the United States and abroad.
