The calabash or gourd was known in its legend as the hulu, witch doctors used to carry medicine or ancient remedies for healing. The hulu was thought to absorb negative qi energy that could affect health and is a traditional Chinese medicine cure. The calabash was also grown in molded forms for different shapes. One used to contain crickets for their songs like a musical instrument. It is a symbol of the Xian immortals.
